Letter from The Editor

AT A TIME when I should have been celebrating my eight-year wedding anniversary, I was invited to take a well-earned break from life itself, to leave behind all of life’s constant stresses by slipping up the mountainside to Gwinganna – a beautiful retreat that sits amidst stunning hilltop views across the entire Gold Coast.
With all thoughts of negativity and depression packed tightly away in the back of my mind, I set off on my mini-break with a bag jam-packed full of newly purchased designer yoga gear (you never know who might be staying there) and an armload of good books. I admit I was a little nervous as to what sort of activities may be involved as I really don’t do mountain-hiking. How relieved I was to find you can select your own fitness of choice (yoga sounded plenty physical for me, I was on a break after all).
The retreat, with it’s own spa unlike anything I’ve ever seen in my life, is set in natural surroundings that seem a world away from the fast-paced city life bustling below it just 30 minutes away, where Hugh Jackman frequents – and liked it so much he bought a bit of it (he wasn’t there on my stay, bummer) and Nicole and Keith slipped in for a quiet stay after filming of Australia wrapped up.
While they pampered me the first day with a Rockupuncture massage – that’s where they use a Japanese acupuncture combined with a hot stone massage – to make all your cares and worries slip away. The second day was followed with an afternoon of further bliss with a Heavenessence massage – more hot stones – and floatiness.
It worked a treat, lifting my mood and finding a bit of inner peace, after adjusting to the silence of the bush (no kids yelling and demanding attention, no dogs barking or waiting to be walked, no cellphone bleeping). Apart from being scared a snake might bite me – I am a Kiwi after all – the staff gently assured me I wasn’t much at risk and the morning rituals of chi gong, while watching the sun come up, followed by meals made of sumptuous and organic fare achieved my desired weight-loss intention and went some way toward making me feel horribly guilty about how un-organically I currently live (oops!).
My take-home cookbook soon put paid to that and I’m proud to say I’ve at least attempted to adopt some of the healthy living rituals. With plenty of time to reflect and re-plan, I returned home feeling invigorated, pretty refreshed and very relieved to see my little boy again.
And… breathe out!
